Snowstorm incoming ! !
Went in the forest to enjoy this beautiful snow, and practice winter camping / firecraft.
After a small but somewhat risky hike (sprained toe on slippery, muddy path next to the river) I found a cool clearing that I made use of.
First, I hanged the backpack off the ground (leaving a small opening was a mistake : a bit of snow entered)
Then set-up my quick deploy ridgeline (DIY), and pitched my tarp in a lean-to configuration.
Made fire with ferrorod on birch bark… but the paper thin, wet birch bark couldn’t keep a flame.
I resorted to using a bic lighter + candle (my emergency fire starting kit) because I didn’t want to walk near that muddy path next to the river in the dark.
I could have edited the whole ordeal to make it look like the first firesteel strike sealed the deal.
Always be suspicious of what you see online, it’s easy to package a video in the most satisfying and gratifying way.
Now you know the drill, I made coffee right before sleeping, stored it in my Ti bottle, and shoved it in my sleeping bag. Hot bottle all night, and warm coffee in the morning 😀
Temps went down -3*c / 26*F, with a real feel of -7*c/19*F
Slept early, and woke up at the first signs of light.
Relighting the fire was easy as there were lots of dry charcoal covered by ashes, then I cooked a tactical tartiflette, ate good, and left !!
